Feroze Kamardeen’s Sri Lankan jukebox musical, based on William Shakespeare’s classic love story, went on the boards of the Lionel Wendt Theatre from 13th to 16th August 2026. Five intrepid thespians and one committed crew member took on the epic love story, in two languages, with a mixture of songs and scenes never seen before.
This was a bi-lingual play. A working knowledge of Sinhalese and English was needed to enjoy it fully.
Four nights, as they happened
The run was posted as it went: the trailers, the songs, an LED screen the company would not stop talking about, and the lobby on the last night.
14 July 2026The trailer. Sung in the sweetest smelling words from Sinhala and English, AI free and naturally hallucinated.
19 July 2026The same trailer in Sinhala. සුද්ද සිංහලෙන් හා තේරෙන ඉංග්රීසියෙන්.
26 July 2026Capuletගේ සුන්දර නිවසේ, one of the numbers, three weeks before opening.
6 August 2026An LED screen. Not a backdrop, not a painted flat. The largest the company has ever had, and visible from several rows back.
9 August 2026A landmark agreement with Krap Studios for one state of the art handheld FM mike. It is handheld, so there are no wires.
9 August 2026The cast walks onto the Lionel Wendt stage for the first time. Selfies were taken, history was made.
10 August 2026Aswaa Katawaa grills the company about the show and does not hold back.
10 August 2026He came to watch a show and left as Music Director, after an interview held outside the toilets of the Lionel Wendt.
11 August 2026Locked out of the main stage, the cast channels the spirit of the Lionel Wendt from a little side room instead.
12 August 2026Romeo breaks into song as a final farewell, while Juliet takes a long nap through an untimely ballad.
13 August 2026Juliet turns to Friar Lawrence, who does what anyone would do. He offers her a drink.
13 August 2026For never was a story of more woe, but make it a නාඩගම. Opening night.
16 August 2026What the audience made of it, asked on the way out.
17 August 2026Curtain down. This is what the Lionel Wendt lobby sounded like on the way out.
16 August 2026
That’s a wrap
Romeo & Juliet නාඩගම closed after four nights at the Lionel Wendt. Tickets for that run are no longer on sale.
It’s back for three more nights, Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026.
Thank you to everyone who came, sang along, and stayed till the lights came up.
